Another big Owatonna-based company has added its name to the list of organizations making pledges toward a new high school. District voters go to the polls Tuesday, May 14 to decide on a building referendum for a new Owatonna High School.

The district announced Monday, May 6 that Gopher Sport is pledging equipment for a new building, "to ensure students at the high have more opportunities to be physically active throughout the school day," the district stated in a news release.

Gopher Sport would contribute equipment for the school's physical education classes and fitness room in addition to active seating and work stations for classrooms. CEO Todd Jennings said, "Gopher Sport has been in the Owatonna community since 1947 and we have a commitment to give back to our community."

He added, "It the referendum passes on May 14, we would be delighted to support the new high school with innovative equipment that will help the students enjoy more active and healthy lives."

Owatonna Superintendent Jeff Elstad expressed his gratitude, "We continue to be thankful for the generosity of our local businesses and continue to be amazed by the pride felt by all who live and work within our community."

Federated Insurance, Wenger Corporation, Viracon and Mayo Clinic Health Systems have all pledged financial or other support to a new structure in Owatonna to replace the approximately 100-year-old building.

The news release says the Gopher contribution is through "their Gopher, STEM-Supplies and Moving Minds brands."

District residents interested in a tour of the current high school can stop in Saturday, May 11 from 8 - 10 am for a guided tour. Report to the area near the auditorium doors. You can click here for the information guide that is handed out during the tour.

People can absentee vote up until Monday, May 13 at the Steele County Auditor's Office at 630 Florence Avenue in West Hills. Hours are 8 am - 5 pm Monday through Friday and Saturday, May 11 from 10 am - 3 pm.
