Bethlehem Academy Volleyball Edges WEM in 5 Sets
Faribault Bethlehem Academy came from behind tonight to defeat Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 3 sets to 2 in a Gopher Conference showdown.
Both teams came into the match undefeated in the Gopher. The Buccaneers had a 2-1 lead after winning the first set 25-23 and the third set 25-20. The Cardinals dominated the second set 25-14 before winning the must win 4th set 25-19 and seized momentum in a 15-8 5th set victory.
These teams were evenly matched. In my opinion the difference was the block by the Cardinals, particularly in the 5th set and more efficient serving. BA finished the night with 7 service errors while Waterville-Elysian-Morristown had 13 miscues on the serve.
W-E-M sophmore libero Grace Baker was all over picking up digs finishing with 30. BA junior Kate Trump had 16 kills and 28 digs.
Trump, junior Jaden Lang, junior setter Reagan Kangas and senior Ellie Cohen were our Malecha's Auto Body Crunch Time Faribault Players of the match. Lang was very good on the block with five and finished with 8 kills on the night.
Senior Ellie Cohen tallied 11 kills, 17 digs. Kangas finished the night with 46 set assists and 9 digs.
Junior Lindsay Hanson hammered 8 kills with 4 blocks, 8 digs.
Accurate serving was key also. The Cardinals had 6 service errors in the first three sets and one the rest of the match. WEM had 3 service aces, 13 service errors.
The Buccaneers official statistics had four players with double digit kills led by senior Alex Heuss with 16, senior Riley Harmon collected 14, sophmores Claire Bohlen and Alayna Atherton had 12 and 10 kills respectively.
WEM finished the night with 33 hitting errors and a total .115 attack percentage.
Senior setter Mikaya Schuster had 52 assists.
Waterville-Elysian-Morristown finished the night with 121 digs led by Baker with 30, sophmore Josie Volkmann had 27, Bohlen 24 digs, junior Jordan Green 14 digs.
