Cannon Falls, Waterville Seasons End While Webster Wins

The Cannon Falls Bears were defeated by the Buckman Billygoats 7-1 in the first round of the Minnesota Baseball Association Class C State Amateur Baseball Tournament.

The Waterville Indians and Loretto Larks opened action Friday night after a nearly two hour rain delay in Faribault with a 10-7 slugfest.

The Webster Sox defeated the Milroy Irish 7-3 in Dundas Saturday.

Cannon Falls only had 3 hits against Buckman pitcher Matt Tautges the right handed Pierz High School graduate from Nisswa.  Tautges struck out 3 batters, walked 4 while going the distance.

The Bears used three pitchers.  Nick Drinken went the first 4 innings allowing 5 hits, 4 runs, all earned striking out 2 with no walks.  He took the loss.  Keith Meyers went the next 3 innings with 3 hits allowed, 3 runs, 2 earned, 2 strikeouts, no walks, a hit batter.  Luke Winchell finished the last 2 innings giving up 1 hit. He had 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Bears catcher Carlton Lindow had the only RBI with a single in the 7th inning.  The other singles came from Luke Sjoquist and Eugene Larkin.

The Billygoats scored 3 runs in the 4th and 3 runs in the 5th inning adding another run in the 7th at Bell Field in Faribault.

Aaron Weber smacked two hits including a double for 2 RBI, Andrew Rueckert had 3 hits, 2RBI and a double.  Jack Suska a pair of hits in the 10 hit Billygoats attack.

Weber is a Pierz High School graduate, went to St. Scholastica in Duluth where he resides.  Rueckert is from Foley and Suska is from Pierz.

Webster cranked out 11 hits in their come from behind win at Dundas.  The Milroy Irish took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning.  The Sox matched the run in the 5th and had crooked numbers in the 7th and 8th innings.

Peter Tveite pitched the first 8 innings, Jordan Huwe had a clean 9th inning for Webster.

Tveite allowed 6 hits, 3 runs, all earned, struck out 10, walked 4.  4 of the 6 hits for Milroy were extra base hits.  The Lakeville North graduate will be a junior next season at Winona State University where he made 11 relief appearances with 2 saves, 20.1 innings pitched last spring.  He fanned 10, walked 4, allowed 26 hits.

Huwe is also from Lakeville.

Brooks Prochaska had 2 hits, 3 RBI with a double for the Sox, Jake Elness 2 hits, 2 RBI and a double, Adam Schmitz an RBI hit and Peter Grassl two sacrifice fly RBI.

Waterville had their season end against a Loretto Larks team loaded with guys with the last name of Koskie.

The most famous would be former Minnesota Twins player Corey Koskie but shortstop son Bradley was the star of the game with 4 RBI including a bases clearing, two out, full count double in a 7 run third inning that gave Loretto the lead they would never relinquish.

Waterville greeted Larks starting pitcher Troy Beckman with a double by Ty Kaus, single by Bladyn Bartelt and double by Luke Sellner to start the game.  An error (one of 5 by Loretto) helped the Indians jump out to a 3-0 lead.

The Larks scored a run in the bottom of the first off starter Luke Sellner.  Sellner threw to 5 batters in the 3rd inning without recording an out and was relieved by Nolan Grose.

Grose got a couple of strikeouts after walking the first batter he faced to load the bases and had the 3-2 count against Bradley Koskie before Koskie hammered the bases clearing double.

Watervile had multiple opportunities in the game.  They were ahead 4-1 going into the bottom of the third inning after scoring a run in the top of the inning thanks to two Loretto errors and a single by Josh Cook.

The Indians put a crooked number on the board in the fourth inning scoring 2 runs on 2 hits with 2 more Loretto errors.  The scoring all came with two outs because the first two batters of the inning were retired by Providence Academy High School student Caleb Koskie.

The young man had a terrific breaking ball and some pop on his fast ball.  Ty Kaus gained first on a swinging but resulting in an error. Bartelt, Sellner and Ben Boran all singled before a strikeout looking ended the inning.

After 4 innings the score was 8-6 Loretto.

The Larks added a run in the 5th inning when Keenan Hodgkin clubbed a RBI single following a Bradley Koskie single.

In the 6th inning after Caleb Koskie walked Kaus and Bartelt the Larks brought in draftee from Buffalo Eric Newman.  The hard throwing right handed pitcher went to the University of Minnesota Crookston.

Newman faced 16 batters, struck out 5, walked 1, allowed 3 singles.

Shane Sellner opened the 7th inning for Waterville with a single.  Dalton Grose was walked with one out before Isaac Turner hit a 2 out 2 strike RBI single.

Thew Larks added a insurance run in the 8th when Indians pitcher Tom Gannon issued a two out walk to the #9 hitter.  Following an infield single Bradley Koskie stroked his third hit of the game for his 4th RBI.

Gannon's walk was the 9th of the game for Waterville pitchers with 3 of them scoring.

Loretto had 15 hits, Waterville 10 hits in the game which started at 9:13 p.m. and ended at 12:20 a.m.

The umpire appeared to take pleasure in punching out Corey Koskie in his first at bat of the game against Luke Sellner.  Koskie had a bloop single in the third inning Loretto onslaught flew out his next two at bats and was walked in his final trip to the plate in the 7th inning.

Caleb Koskie got the win and Newman the save for the Larks.  Luke Sellner was saddled with the loss for the Indians.

Owatonna graduate Derek Ritter is a member of the Loretto team.  Ritter played college baseball at Hamline University in St. Paul.
