Eddie Vedder Performs Tom Petty’s ‘Room at the Top’ for Oscar ‘In Memoriam’ Segment
If you were tuning in to the 90th Annual Academy Awards Sunday night (March 4), you might have spotted Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder in any of the crowd shots behind Meryl Streep. But Vedder wasn't just attending the ceremony for the fun of it. He also performed at the event.
The Pearl Jam vocalist was the singer for the In Memoriam segment at the Oscars, playing "Room at the Top" from the late Tom Petty who passed away last fall. After an introduction from Jennifer Garner, Vedder, dressed in black, took the stage with his guitar and backing keyboardist Brendan O'Brien as he performed the fitting and moving Petty song.
While Petty was acknowledged in the intro by Garner, he was not part of the actual "In Memoriam" montage, with Chuck Berry being the lone popular musician making the cut amidst the actors, actresses, directors and various crew members.
Vedder has been performing solo for most of the past year, but he's set to resume touring with Pearl Jam this spring and with dates booked into the summer this year. See all of their stops here.
