In 2018 Liz Wall Strohfus Field at Faribault Municipal Airport was struck by a tornado. In fact the anniversary was this week. When the storm was over there was not much left of the Arrival/Departure Building at the airport.
Also severely damaged were several hangars. Planes were overturned. It looked like a bomb hit the area.
Severe roof damage was also suffered on the hangar to the left in the above photo. Those hangars have since been replaced.
Travis Block, City of Faribault Public Works Director is the City's Laison with the Airport Advistory Commission. He was joined on Thursday's KDHL AM Minnesota Program by longtime Commission member Pete Johnson.
An open house is Saturday, September 25, 2021 between 8:00 a.m. and Noon. People can take tours of the new Main Terminal (Arrival/Departure) Building at the airport.
There will be refreshments until they are all gone.
Johnson explained the airport was placed at it's present location in 1947 after two previous locations in the community.
Well technically I guess they weren't airports just places to take off and land. Present day Alexander Park North and an area on the south end of town called Bluebird Estates.
Block told AM Minnesota listeners the improvements have definitely enhanced the look of the airport and brought with him details from a economic impact study showing the airport has a substantial impact on the Faribault area.
He emphasized the Northfield business community also uses the airport heavily because they have no airport.
The AM Minnesota Program can be heard in it's entirety below.
