The Park Center Pirates baseball team defeated Cannon Falls 6-1 on Saturday at John Burch Park in Cannon Falls.

The Bombers came into the game ranked fourth in the Class 2A Let's Play Baseball Minnesota high school poll and appeared to be flat.

Pirates head coach Nathan Johnson told me before the game his team was "pumped" to play on such a "terrific field."

Park Center out of Brooklyn Park came into the game with a five-game losing streak and just one win on the season. They sure played like they were pumped, scoring five of their runs in the first two innings.

Sophomore lead-off hitter Mitch Maier opened the game with a perfect bunt and stole second base. After a walk, Park Center's No. 3 hitter, sophomore Tanner Stein, smacked a double, scoring Maier.

Eight batters came to the plate and four runs scored in the inning.

The Bombers were never able to recover and were stymied by junior pitcher Mack Sorre. Sorre was not overpowering, but super efficient. He threw 64 pitches, 40 for strikes, in his six innings of work, striking out one and walking two batters. He had 15 of 25 first-pitch strikes.

One of the walks was the only run to score for Cannon Falls. The Bombers had just three hits off Sorre and the run scored in the sixth came during a double play.

Uncharachteristically, Cannon Falls had four errors in the game. They left nine runners on base and five in scoring position.

The Pirates had eight hits and stranded seven runners with six in scoring position. Park Center had one error.

Senior Reece Boyle-Hoban started on the mound for the Bombers and went the first three innings. He threw 55 pitches, 30 for strikes, with no strikeouts and three walks, 11 of 18 first-pitch strikes.

Four more Bomber pitchers would get some work in.

Cannon Falls head coach Bucky Lindow told me before the game he wanted to see some guys pitch that had not been in a game yet. The others were seniors Jared Anderson and Nolan Hartl, juniors Hayden Strain and Chase Reber.

Cannon Falls came into the game with a team batting average of .303 and team ERA of 2.64.

Bomber hits came from Max Bowen, Carleton Lindow, Andrew Egge and Hayden Strain.  All were singles.

Cannon Falls is now 6-3 on the season and hosts Rochester Lourdes at 5PM Monday. Park Center is 2-5 and travels to Robbinsdale Armstrong on Tuesday for a 4PM game.

The Pirates are a Class 4A school and play in the loaded 14-team Northwest Suburban Conference.
