Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - The attorney representing the family of George Floyd says an independent medical examiner has been hired to conduct a second autopsy.

According to the criminal complaint charging former Minneapolis Officer Derek Chauvin with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, the results of a preliminary autopsy determined Floyd did not die from traumatic asphyxiation or strangulation and stated the likely cause was a combination of the stress of being restrained, his underlying health conditions, and any potential intoxicants in his system.

A statement from attorney Benjamin Crump says the independent autopsy was requested because the Hennepin County Medical Examiner did not address in detail the effect of the use of force on Floyd's neck and the "extent of suffering at the hands of the police."

Crump went on to say the family was not surprised by the finding, but is tragically disappointed, "We hope that this does not reflect efforts to create a false narrative for the reason George Floyd died"

Benjamin Crump is a prominent civil rights attorney and has represented Floyd's family since shortly after the 46-year-old Twin Cities man died in police custody Monday evening in an incident captured by a cellphone video that shows Chauvin pressing a knee into Floyd's neck.
