Huskies Complete Unbeaten Season
Owatonna football completed its second straight unbeaten regular season on Wednesday 54-7 at Rochester John Marshall. The Huskies spotted the Rockets a touchdown after an early first quarter turnover, then scored the next 54 points. It was the 27th consecutive win for the two-time defending state champs who earned a first-round playoff bye and will next take the field on Saturday, October 26.
Coach Jeff Williams reacted to the early deficit by saying it's good for the team to deal with a little adversity. Hear Williams interview for Saturday's AM 1390 KRFO Coaches Show below.
The Huskies welcomed Ethan Walter back to the lineup from a high ankle sprain. He looked pretty healthy as he hauled in a short pass from Brayden Truelson and turned it into an 80-yard touchdown reception on Owatonna's next drive. He broke one tackle and stayed far enough in front of a player trying to track him down.
Sam Henson hit a 23-yard field goal on Owatonna's next drive. He added one from 34 yards in the closing minute of the first half to give the Huskies a 40-7 advantage at the break. Henson is 5-for-5 on field goal tries this season. He connected on 6-of-7 PAT attempts at Rochester, making him 35-for-37 for the season. Henson was recently named as one of the top special teams players in the state. Williams additionally gave him credit for his long kick offs that continually pin teams at or inside their own 20 to start drives.
Payton Beyer had a monster day on defense with two interceptions, one of which was a pick-six, and a fumble recovery return to the one-yard line. It appeared he crossed the goal line with the ball but was ruled down. Williams said team video showed it was a touchdown. Sol Havelka scored on the next play. Isaac Gefre had an interception and Grant Achterkirch recovered a fumble as the Huskies forced five turnovers.
Beyer also made a great catch in the back of the end zone from Truelson. Havelka connected with Matt Williams with a perfectly placed pass midway through the third quarter. Tanner Hall had 14 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown, all in the first half. Hall got some great holes opened by the offensive line and made some wonderful cuts on the rough John Marshall field.
Logan Gauthier completed the scoring with a TD pass to Brandon Skala in the fourth quarter.
There is a decent chance that Owatonna (8-0) will face John Marshall (3-5) in the section semifinals. Williams addresses the challenge involved with that type of a rematch in the interview below as well.
