It’s a Hoax: DNR Says Fishing Season Not Canceled in Minnesota

The Minnesota DNR says to not fall for the online hoax that says the coronavirus has canceled the fishing season in Minnesota.

The ongoing battle with the coronavirus COVID-19 has caused many things to be disrupted, postponed and outright canceled here in Minnesota and across the country. But the upcoming fishing season ISN'T one of them.

That's the word the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is spreading after an online hoax making the rounds on social media Thursday said the season was canceled. Well, the DNR says it's not-- and, in fact, getting outside (as long as you're still practicing proper social distancing) is not only canceled, it's encouraged by none other than Governor Walz himself.

The DNR showed a screenshot of the fake announcement on their Twitter page Thursday (check it out below.) It says, "Rumor alert! There's a fake social media post circulating that suggests the 2020 fishing season is closed in Minnesota. It's not true! The fishing season remains open. Remember: We're your trusted source for information on state fishing seasons."

And those seasons, by the way, include the trout opener, set for Saturday, April 18th; the walleye opener, which gets rolling on Saturday, May 9th; and the musky opener, which will take place on Saturday, June 6th.
