Why Are Flights So Expensive in Some States?
According to the study, it all comes down to options (or lack thereof). Alaska tops the list as the priciest state to fly from, with average flights costing a whopping $522.94. Limited airport choices like Anchorage and Fairbanks mean fewer airlines competing for your business.

The same goes for Utah, the second-most expensive state, where residents rely on Salt Lake City and St. George airports. Their average flights hit $436.98. Michigan isn’t far behind, landing in third place with $435.09, thanks to Detroit Metro Wayne County Airport, one of the priciest airports in the country.
How Expensive is It to Fly Out of Minnesota?
Minnesota lands at #11 on the list of the most expensive states to fly from, with the average ticket setting you back $401.17. That’s higher than the national average of $378.44. Ouch!

We’ve got the Twin Cities’ Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) as our main hub. While MSP offers more choices than some states, the demand for flights and its status as a major hub for Delta Airlines might be driving up those costs.
Why Is Flying Out of MSP Airport in Minnesota So Expensive?
Travel industry analyst Henry Harteveldt shed light on the situation in an article for the Star Tribune, explaining that airlines with hubs at specific airports tend to dominate the schedule and pricing. “If an airline has a hub at an airport, other airlines tend to avoid scheduling as many flights as they otherwise might,” Harteveldt said. “They want to avoid getting into a battle for customers with that hub airline.”
Essentially, Delta’s stronghold at MSP reduces competition, giving them greater control over ticket prices. This can mean fewer options for travelers looking for a deal and higher average fares overall.

Geography also plays a significant role in driving up airfare costs in Minnesota. According to the ST article, many people want to fly to coastal destinations that are farther away, and longer flights mean higher ticket prices.
