Wisconsin Hatchery Gets Last-Minute Lifeline After Public Pushback
Sometimes the voice of the people is actually heard. That's what happened in the case of the Brule River Fish Hatchery. It was announced that there weren't enough funds to operate the fish hatchery in 2026, meaning they wouldn't be stocking trout this year.
A group called "Friends of Wisconsin Fisheries" was formed to advocate for recreational fishermen throughout Wisconsin. They created a petition to provide funding for hatcheries and stocking programs. They reached out to legislators and worked tirelessly to protect recreational fishing as the DNR budget continues to be cut.
In previous posts, Representative Angela Stroud acknowledged that the DNR does need some reform, but also needs support from the Wisconsin Legislature.

Representative Angela Stroud was an advocate for funding for the hatcheries and posted the news that the hatchery would remain operational for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.
The fight isn't over, as this funding is for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. Stroud says more information will be coming soon, so we'll see what the future looks like for keeping hatcheries like the Brule River open. They stock thousands of trout that eventually find their way to Lake Superior, and it's a very important service that we need to continue for the future of the outdoors.
