Minnesota Has Over 400 Farmers Markets. Here Is How To Find One
There is a certain rhythm to a Minnesota summer. The lakes thaw, the grills come out, and somewhere in every town worth its salt, a cluster of tents and folding tables appears stacked with sun-warmed tomatoes, fresh eggs, and honey from a hive just down the road.
Farmers markets are back for the season, and they are a bigger deal in this state than you might think.
According to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, more than 400 farmers markets operate across the state. As MDA Commissioner Thom Petersen put it, with that many markets, there is likely one near you.
Statewide, farms selling into local and regional markets generate an estimated $184 million in economic activity each year, with around 3,500 farms selling directly to consumers.
Reports indicate the ripple effect runs even deeper, with studies showing every dollar spent at a market generates an additional $2 to $6 of local economic activity.

Why It Matters More Than You Think
In Minnesota, that multiplier is not just an abstract number. It means your dollar stays with a neighbor instead of leaving town.
The Minnesota Farmers Union notes that markets give family farmers a way to bring fresh, nutritious food to communities that might otherwise lack it, while keeping money circulating close to home.
Many markets also accept SNAP/EBT and Market Bucks, and Minnesota lawmakers created a new farmers market grant program in 2024 to further strengthen access.
However, none of that does you any good if you cannot find one. The good news is that tracking down a market near you, or near the lake, or along your weekend road trip, has never been easier.
How To Find A Minnesota Farmers Market Near You
The best place to start is the Minnesota Grown directory, run by the Department of Agriculture, which lets you search for markets at home, at the cabin, or on the road, with one-click driving directions to your next stop.
For a more detailed search, the Minnesota Farmers' Market Association map lets you filter by location, schedule, accessibility, and which programs each market runs, including SNAP/EBT.
If you are headed Up North, ArrowheadGrown.org focuses specifically on Northeast Minnesota markets and producers, covering Duluth, Two Harbors, Grand Rapids, Hibbing, and beyond.

So this weekend, or whenever you can, skip a grocery run and go find your people instead. Grab a coffee, fill a tote bag, and put a few of those $2 to $6 to work right here at home. Your neighbors and your taste buds will thank you.
