Ok, hear me out. I'm not complaining about progress; I'm just saying there is a price associated with it. Superior (and Duluth) have been expanding their fiber internet in the last year, with several providers offering service. This summer there has been a lot of underground drilling and running of cables and lines, and that's brought a noticeable problem to some residents.

I've Lived In Superior For 20 Years and Never Had A Rat

I've lived in Superior for over 20 years, and this summer was the first time I've seen a rat. Sure, I've had my problems with mice before, but I had never seen a rat until all the underground utility work started.

My neighbor has trapped multiple rats in his garage. My dad, who lives two blocks away, just had rats burrow into his crawlspace, and he could hear them running around. And that has to be pretty loud because he doesn't normally wear his hearing aids at home.

This summer our dog sprinted across the backyard and pounced on a rat. We then had to make sure she was up to date on all her shots and rabies vaccine.

Trenching + Digging Disrupts Pest Underground Nests

First off, I didn't even know we had rats in town. Secondly, I didn't know that digging and trenching can force them out of their underground nests.

And, for the trifecta, we have cooler nights starting as we head into autumn, and that's when pests normally try to get into your house anyway. So, be careful and make sure you plug up any holes, cracks, or gaps in your home.

A Necessary Headache For Progress

As I said at the beginning, I'm not complaining about progress. The more options we have for internet and utilities, the better. It's just a friendly heads-up that when you see the work being done in your neighborhood, be on the lookout for rats.
