Seems like it has been a while since we've heard about a shortage of PPE. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is the term for equipment worn to minimize exposure to harmful hazards, pathogens, and other substances. When the COVID-19 Pandemic started, there was a huge push for PPE for healthcare workers. 6 years later, there is a different push for PPE in our area.

Wildwoods Animal Rehabilitation Needs PPE

Wildwoods is a wildlife rehabilitation center located in Duluth, Minnesota. They rehabilitate animals that have been orphaned, injured, or sick. They shared a message that caught my eye about how they are in short supply of PPE for their quarantine rooms.

They have two quarantine rooms to prevent the spread of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza. One is for adult animals, and another is for baby waterfowl that are susceptible.

Current Avian Flu Situation

The bird flu is worldwide and affecting wild birds worldwide. This is causing outbreaks in poultry and dairy farms. There have been a few sporadic human cases. The CDC is using its flu surveillance systems to monitor the bird flu activity in people.

So far, there have been 71 cases in the United States in humans, with 2 deaths reported.
