Winter Weather Advisories Now In 10 Minnesota, Wisconsin Counties
After a week that found parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin in a brief deep freeze, this weekend brings warmer weather, but also the potential for ice.
On Saturday, the National Weather Service issued a series of Winter Weather Advisories that cover a total of 10 counties located in Minnesota and Wisconsin. The main concern here isn't snow accumulations, it is the threat of icy roads and sidewalks that could create dangerous travel conditions.
While some of these advisories expired Saturday afternoon, there are 3 that will continue into Sunday.
Winter Weather Advisory #1
The following Winter Weather Advisory went into effect at 4:00 p.m. Saturday and will remain effective until 3:00 p.m. Sunday. It covers four counties and includes the cities of Duluth, Two Harbors, Grand Marais, Silver Bay, and Grand Marais:
- WHAT: Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations up
to one inch and freezing drizzle accumulations around one-tenth of
an inch. - WHERE: Carlton and South St. Louis, Southern Cook, and Southern Lake Counties. This includes the Tribal Lands of the Grand Portage Reservation and the Fond du Lac Band.
- WHEN: From 4 PM Saturday, December 14, to 3 PM Sunday, December 15.
- IMPACTS: Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous.
- ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Snowfall is most likely into the afternoon hours. From Saturday evening and throughout Sunday, freezing drizzle is expected to create less than one-tenth of an inch of ice on untreated surfaces. The best chances for the highest amount of ice accumulations tonight into Sunday morning will be in the higher terrain of the North Shore and on top of the hill in the immediate Duluth metro region.
- PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS: Be prepared for slippery roads. Slow down and use caution while driving. If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.
