As AI Advances, Wisconsin Slams the Door on Robo-Marriage

Despite lagging behind other states on a number of issues, including medical and recreational marijuana laws, Wisconsin lawmakers are now pushing forward on something far more futuristic: banning marriages to artificial intelligence.

It may sound ridiculous that a law would even need to exist to prevent something like this. But believe it or not, it has already happened elsewhere. People in China, Japan, and parts of Europe have held ceremonies marrying artificial intelligence, though none of those unions are legally recognized.

Wisconsin lawmakers appear determined to make sure that trend never becomes a legal gray area in the Badger State.

What Wisconsin Assembly Bill 959 Actually Says

Under Assembly Bill 959, lawmakers are attempting to clearly define what artificial intelligence is and is not under state law. The opening language leaves little room for interpretation, stating that artificial intelligence is not a person, cannot own or control property, and cannot be a spouse, corporate officer, or director.

The bill was introduced on January 29, 2026, and received its first public hearing on February 4 before the Assembly Committee on Science, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence.

Why Lawmakers Say This Matters For Wisconsin

The bill’s intent goes beyond marriage. It explicitly blocks artificial intelligence from holding leadership roles in companies or organizations, such as serving as a CEO or board director.

It also prohibits AI from owning or controlling property, financial accounts, digital assets, or intellectual property. Any assets generated or managed with the help of artificial intelligence would legally belong to the system’s developer or owner, not the AI itself.

No “I Do” for Artificial Intelligence in WI

When it comes to marriage, the bill could not be more direct. It states that artificial intelligence may not be a spouse or domestic partner and may not hold any legal status similar to marriage or a civil union, whether with a human or with another artificial intelligence.

While Minnesota and Wisconsin often find themselves on opposite sides of cultural and political debates, this is one issue where Wisconsin lawmakers appear eager to draw a bright line before technology moves any faster.
