Owatonna Man Charged for Fatal Alcohol-Involved Head-on Crash
26-year-old David Ramirez is charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide and two counts of gross misdemeanor DWI.
The Steele County Sheriff’s Office responded to the deadly crash on the night of November 4 at the intersection of 37th Avenue Southwest and 93rd Street Southwest, which is about 12 miles south of Owatonna.
The responding deputy found a pick-up turned diagonally on the road and an SUV in the ditch.
The driver of the SUV was unconscious. She was identified as 71-year-old Christine Ilene Possin and was pronounced dead at the scene, the complaint says.
The charges say Ramirez was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle Possin was driving.
One of the witnesses who heard the collision and reported the crash told deputies they saw Ramirez stumble out of the pick-up truck and attempted to give aid, the complaint says.
A deputy detected an alcoholic odor coming from Ramirez while administering aid. While receiving care from a firefighter, Ramirez said he was driving the pick-up and that he had two beers prior to the crash, the charges say.
Ramirez was taken from the scene by ambulance then flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester for additional care.
Inside of the pick-up, deputies found an open can of beer, a case of beer and a pistol, the court document says. A blood draw later measured his blood-alcohol concentration at 0.201, the court document says.
A crash reconstruction determined the collision was head-on, according to the complaint.
Ramirez was released without bail following his first court hearing. He is due back in court early next year.
