Two Charged in Shooting at Winona Apartment Complex
The shooting occurred at an apartment complex in the 1750 block of West 7th St. in Winona. Winona Police were responded to the complex on the report of a shooting shortly before 6 p.m. on Sunday.
A caller also reported that a large fight was occurring and that a group of people was scattering from the area with many people fleeing in vehicles.
Upon arrival officers found the bullet that struck one of the buildings had entered the shower area of the unit’s bathroom. The apartment was unoccupied when police arrived at the scene.
The complaint says two rounds found at the scene were 9mm bullets. Officers reviewed security footage and saw a man they knew from prior contacts to be 20-year-old Jayden Michael Jessie and another man engage in a fight.
Jessie is seen walking away after the altercation. That’s when another man, identified by police as 25-year-old Derrell Lamont Walker, is seen pulling an object from his waistband and handing it to Jessie, the complaint says.
The footage then shows Jessie turning around, getting in a shooting stance, raising his right arm and firing what appeared to be a gun at the man he had been fighting, the charges say.
The crowd scattered and Jessie is seen lowering the gun and running around multiple apartments before entering the unit he emerged from prior to the fight, according to the court filing.
Police went to the unit still suspecting Jessie of being inside and made contact with the Winona man, who appeared to have changed out of the clothes he was wearing in the video, the charges say.
Jessie excited the unit and police found clothing in the apartment that matched the outfit of the suspected shooter. Jessie was arrested and denied being involved in a fight and leaving the apartment, the complaint says.
Police found and arrested Walker on a sidewalk near the apartments. The Winona man said he was intoxicated and did not know who the shooter was, the court document states.
Walker was located on the sidewalk speaking with a group of people, and was also placed under arrest. At the Jail, Walker gave a Mirandized statement to law enforcement. Walker said he was intoxicated and did not know who the shooter was. However, Walker told Officers he overheard his mother saying the shooter was Jessie. Walker declined to provide more details.
