Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A federal grand jury has charged a Minnesota man with a hate crime.

The US Attorney's Office for Minnesota says the indictment alleges 35-year-old Justin Anthony Kudla committed a federal hate crime offense when he allegedly assaulted a Black man outside a bar in Belle Plaine in early February of last year. He is charged with using force or the threat of force to injure, intimidate, and interfere with the victim because of his race, color, religion and/or national origin.

The indictment alleges Kudla attacked the man because he was enjoying the accommodations of the business and because of his race. Kudla is charged with one count of interference with federally protected activities and one count of hate crime. Both offenses carry a potential sentence of 10 years in prison.

A news release indicates the case was investigated by the FBI with assistance from the Belle Plaine Police Department and the Department of Justice.
