The criminal complaint says the traffic stop occurred over the Labor Day weekend. An Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office deputy found a vape pen that triggered a search of the vehicle, the court document says.
A deputy stopped the vehicle for a turn signal violation on I-90 in the area of the County Rd. 6 interchange near Stewartville shortly after 2:30 Sunday morning.
While speaking with the driver, identified as 34-year-old Spencer Adam Edwards of North Mankato, the deputy saw what the charges allege was a THC vape pen in the driver’s side door. Edwards stated he thought it was a CBD pen, the complaint says.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 27.2 grams of suspected methamphetamine, the complaint says.
A small amount of the suspect drug was on the driver’s side floorboard and the rest was located inside of a purse on the passenger side floorboard where a female passenger was sitting, according to the court document.
The woman in the passenger seat was identified in the court document as 39-year-old Cassandra Ann Carter of Glenville.
Law enforcement also found 15 cellphones, two digital scales, 200 empty ziplock baggies, post-it notes that appeared to have been ledgers in the purse. The purse also contained Carter’s passport, the complaint says.
Carter is charged with first-degree drug sales and third-degree drug possession. Edwards is facing a charge of fifth-degree drug possession.
Carter and Edwards were released without bail following their first hearings in Olmsted County Court on Tuesday. Carter is due back in court later this month while Edward’s next appearance is scheduled for October.
