The Cannon Falls Police Department issued a couple of News Releases Wednesday about a shooting and subsequent standoff in the community.

The incident began at approximately 11:32 a.m. when Cannon Falls Police officers responded to a 911 call from a female reporting being shot in a residential neighborhood.

The News Release says, "Officers located a 26 year old female that had been shot and after extracting her to a safe area she was transported by Cannon Falls Ambulance to a level one trauma center."

"Officers have established a perimeter around the residence with the assistance from the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office, Dakota County Sheriff's Officer, State Patrol."

"The 25 year old male suspect is believed to be in the residence.  The additional resources of the Emergency Response Team have been requested to assist in attempts to contact the suspect."

The first News Release went on to say, "Based on preliminary information there is not a threat to the general population, however Cannon Falls residents are erncouraged to remain inside and secure their home until the suspect has been located."

"The Cannon Falls schools were notified and have implemented a no one in or out protocol out of abundance of caution until the location of the suspect is known."

The second News Release from the Cannon Falls Police Department came at 5:45 p.m.  It said, "At approximately 5:05 p.m. the suspect from the shooting today was confirmed deceased inside the residence.  The Cannon Falls schools have been notified and worked in coordination with the Cannon  Falls Police Department to facilitate the release of students in a safe manner. There is no longer a need for residents to rremain inside and they can resume normal activities."

"There will be police activity in the area for several hours.  Some will impact street traffic in limited areas.  The investigation of the incident is just beginning, and will take several hours to determine the details that lead to this shooting."

"The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Crime Scene Unit will be assisting the Cannon Falls Police Department in processing the scene."

No update was given on the status of the victim taken to a trauma center.
