John Sherwin, Faribault, Mn. Police Chief commended a citizen for quick action in stopping an attempted robbery Monday evening, February 27, 2023.

Faribault Police officers were dispatched to the Holiday Station Store in the 700 block of 4th St. NW at 5:47 p.m.

Upon arrival , Faribault officers and Rice County Sheriff's deputies observed the suspect being detained inside the store by a customer and store employees.

The suspect was arrested and identified as a 17-year old Faribault resident.

According to a News Release by the Faribault Police Department, "Statements and store surveillance footage show that the suspect entered the store and immediately proceeded behind the counter where he attempted to grab merchandise.

"As store clerks intervened, the suspect began to physically assault them with his hands.  A customer inside the store observed this occur and immediately acted, grabbing and detaining the suspect for the next 2 minutes while store employees called 911 and until the first deputies and officers arrived."

"The juvenile suspect was transported to the Dakota County Juvenile Detention Center and is being held on Simple Robbery and 3 counts of 5th Degree Assault."

In the News Release Sherwin comments, "I am grateful for the quick action of the citizen who intervened, placing themselves at risk and protecting the store clerks from the assaultive suspect.  While we always encourage citizens to act with caution when witnessing a crime of violence, we are incredibly appreciative when individuals go above and beyond in their civic duty."
