Reports of severe weather have already started this Spring in Minnesota.  While every storm doesn't include a full-blown display of lightning in the sky, when it does, there is one thing you'll want to stop doing immediately.

When Thunder Starts Rolling In Minnesota, Get Out Of The Shower ASAP

The sky gets a little darker, rain starts dropping, and all of a sudden you hear a boom that rattles your house.

The National Weather Service has said that when you hear thunder, there is a really good chance that there is lightning within 10 miles of you.

If you hear that roar of thunder and see lightning within 30 seconds, Healthline states that means you are within striking distance.

Regardless of the exact distance, if you are in severe weather, there is one place you need to get out of asap - the shower.  Here's why this is a huge risk when lightning is nearby.

Why Lightning and Your Plumbing Are A Dangerous Combo

When thunder starts, put the shampoo bottle down.

According to the CDC's official lightning safety guidelines, because about a third of all lightning-strikes injuries happen indoors, there are several things you should avoid doing during a thunderstorm.

"Avoid water.  Do NOT bathe, shower, wash dishes, or have any contact with water during a thunderstorm because lightning can travel through a building's plumbing."

- US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Why Shouldn't You Take a Shower During a Thunderstorm?

According to the CDC, there is a chance that lightning will travel through the plumbing.  Bolts of lightning and water with your body standing there in it are not a good combination and the CDC suggests to avoid running water during a storm.  That is the best precaution to reduce your risk of being struck by lightning.

The CDC also indicates in their official lightning safety guidelines that you should also avoid the following:

  • Avoid all running water
  • Stay off corded phones
  • Unplug electronics
  • Stay away from windows and doors
  • Do NOT lie on concrete floors or lean on concrete walls during a thunderstorm due to the chance that lightning can travel through the metal wires or bars inside
