Minnesota Hairstylist Helps People in Need with Free Haircuts

A hairstylist based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota is giving back to her community by using her talents to help those in need. She put together an event to give free haircuts to people experiencing homelessness in her area.

Katie's Journey to Becoming a Hairstylist

Katie Steller is the hairstylist behind this awesome event. She owns Steller Hair Company in Minneapolis and actually got into cutting hair because she had a hard relationship with her hair as a kid. FOX 9 says that she had multiple health problems growing up and it caused her to lose her hair.

When Katie went to get her first haircut, "a stylist treated her with kindness and compassion ... prompting [her] to choose the profession as a career."

Katie Wanted to Give Back to Her Community

Because of her experience, Katie really understood the power and impact of getting a haircut. She told FOX 9, "'Haircuts are something that a lot of people take for granted as being something that's just easy to walk through a door, go pay for a haircut and it's not always as accessible as that.'"

So she put together an event called Line Up at the Library, which just recently took place at the Minneapolis Central Library.

She gathered about 6 other professional hairstylists and barbers to join her in the event and they were able to give free haircuts to about 50 people in the area who are currently homeless.

Not only does Katie do this event, but she also goes out and cuts hair for people in need for free at other times of the year. She does it through the non-profit she set up a few years ago called The Steller Kindness Project.

I love the thought process she shared with FOX 9. She said, "'I can't change the world. I can't fix all the problems. I can't do so many things, but I can cut people's hair and I can show that I care through that.'"
