Minnesota City Claims Title as One of America’s Snowiest Spots

Here in Minnesota, we take pride in our ability to survive winter, so it's not a surprise one city in our fair state was just named one of the snowiest spots in the U.S.

Minnesota may be known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, but maybe the 'Land of 10,000 Snowflakes' might be more appropriate for this city. That's because it just landed on the latest list of the 10 Snowiest Cities in the U.S., according to real estate firm, Redfin. They looked at seasonal snowfall data for major cities with over 75,000 residents in the U.S. to compile their latest list.

Now, when you talk about winter in Minnesota, things can vary widely, given how big our state is. The official state of Minnesota website says the Bold North ranks 12th in area among the 50 states, stretching a massive 406 miles from north to south, and 358 miles from east to west.

Because of that distance, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says annual snow totals range from 36 inches in the southwest to more than 70 inches along the Lake Superior snow belt on the North Shore.

And, sure enough, Minnesota's only entry on the Redfin list of the 10 Snowiest Cities in the U.S. can indeed be found on the rocky shores of Lake Superior: Duluth. Redfin's 2023 list puts Duluth in the #5 spot on the list, with an average seasonal snowfall of just over 90 inches.

Redfin said, "The fifth-snowiest city in the U.S. is Duluth, MN. During the long winter, Duluth regularly sees snow, and experiences extremely cold weather for months on end. In fact, Duluth is the coldest city in the contiguous U.S."
