We love our pets, there is no arguing that. They become members of the family, we refer to them as our fur-babies, and some of us even buy them birthday and Christmas presents.

I went digging around online and found out that there is a National Adopt-A-Cat Month, no surprise there. It's a good thing, we have a whole month to celebrate the adoption of cats into our homes. In my family, it truly was an adoption, both times. We did not purchase a pet, we gave a kitten a home, twice.

We adopted our first kitten from the Steele County Humane Society, to be a companion animal for my oldest, and when she moved, we kept the cat for her. Our second kitten was "free" and as anyone who knows what is needed for pets, getting a kitten free is not free. So, now the companion cat has a companion cat of her own, and I have two fur-babies that I would not trade.

The best way to celebrate this month is to adopt a cat. You can check out the SCHS for adoptable pets, or find ways to help care for the pets if you cannot adopt any.

Aren't they cute?
