33-year-old David Collier was arraigned Friday on four felony charges and three gross misdemeanor counts in connection to the incident early Wednesday morning. The new charges say he fired a single shot into the ground while he was attempting to raise a gun he withdrew from his pocket in a shooting position.
The charges say an officer got a hand on the barrel before Collier could aim to fire at police. Collier is also accused of pulling the trigger of a taser holstered on one of the arresting officers.
Court records indicate Collier has a criminal record that dates back to 2010 and includes 10 felony convictions for burglary, drug possession and other crimes in Olmsted, Wabasha and Dakota Counties. One of his more high-profile arrests occurred in 2015 when he led local authorities on a 15-mile-long high-speed chase in a stolen pickup that ended when a State Trooper fired three shots into the vehicle after Collier crashed head-on into a State Patrol squad car and then tried to ram another law enforcement vehicle.
Minnesota state law prohibits convicted felons from possessing a firearm. Court records also show that Collier was committed as part of a felony conviction stemming from a 2015 case in Wabasha County.
The Rochester Police Department statement says Collier was wanted on two active probation violation warrants, one of which stems from a felony fleeing conviction in Wabasha County in 2021.
No one was hurt in the early Wednesday morning hotel shooting. Collier’s next court date is scheduled for February 28.
