Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Mayo Clinic is facing a class-action lawsuit over a  data breach involving hundreds of patients.

Mayo recently revealed a former employee had improperly accessed the medical records of more than 1600 patients.

So far, two lawsuits have been filed in Olmsted County District Court.

Records identify the plaintiffs in one of the cases as Amanda Bloxton-Kippola of Michigan and Chelsea Turner of Minneapolis. The records say “Bloxton-Kippola received health care from Mayo Clinic in connection with breast cancer treatment” and Turner “received health care from Mayo Clinic in connection with dermatologic treatment.”

The other case was filed on behalf of Olga Ryabchuk of Minneapolis who claims the former employee viewed “images of her private parts” that were taken in 2015.

Both cases have been filed as class action complaints because of the large number of patients involved in the breach.

The lawsuits identify the former employee as Ahmad Alsughayer, believed to be a surgeon.

Mayo issued a statement in October that said the former employee may have viewed information about the name of the patient, demographic information, date of birth, medical record number, clinical notes, and in some cases images.

One of the lawsuits says the breach included ” nude photographs taken by Mayo Clinic in connection with the health care Plaintiffs received from Mayo Clinic.”

A case management conference is scheduled in December for both lawsuits.
