Need A Billy Joel Fix?
I woke up this morning to the Facebook posts of quite a few of my friends at the Billy Joel concert at Target Field in Minneapolis last night. I immediately regretted being such a tightwad and not shelling out the few bucks for tickets to the show. I've been a Billy Joel fan since his first hit, "Piano Man," in 1973. I've enjoyed his music over the years but have never seen him perform live in concert.
From the reviews I've read in the various newspapers and what I've seen online it sounds like Joel really amped up the energy last night and put on one helluva show. According to the Pioneer Press website, TwinCities.com, he was joined by Guns 'N Roses lead singer, Axl Rose, (sorry, Axl, you can sing with AC/DC all you want, I'll never refer to you as AC/DC lead singer) twice. The first time Joel strapped on a guitar and joined Rose for a raucous version of "Highway to Hell." Rose rejoined Joel during "Big Shot" in the encore. Rose is, more than likely, in town for this Sunday's Guns 'N' Roses performance at US Bank Stadium.
Okay, the main thrust of this story is that after seeing all these posts from people I know that were able to go to the show last night, I now have Billy Joel music stuck in my head. So I'm going to perform a little musical exorcism and get some of it out. Enjoy:
- 1
Movin' Out
This single made it to No. 17 on the Hot 100.
- 2
Big Shot
This single made it to No. 14 on the Hot 100.
- 3
Sometimes a Fantasy
The last single from Glass Houses went to No. 36 on the Hot 100.
- 4
Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway - Live))
Even though this wasn't released as a single, I love this version from Songs in the Attic.
- 5
Captain Jack (live)
Another song from Songs in the Attic that was never a single but I really like. In fact, the whole Songs in the Attic album is my favorite Billy Joel release.
- 6
Allentown
This one was a No. 17 hit on the Hot 100.
- 7
Goodnight Saigon
This is my favorite Billy Joel song by far. Sung from the point of view of a young Marine fighting in Vietnam. It made it to No. 56 on the Hot 100.
- 8
You May Be Right
From Glass Houses, this single went to No. 7 on the Hot 100.
- 9

No. 10 on the Hot 100.
