The Owatonna High School girls' tennis team swept Red Wing 7-0 in the first round of section playoff action Tuesday. OHS goes to Northfield Thursday. Huskies girls soccer won 1-0 at Rochester Mayo, while the boys' match ended in a 3-3 tie. That wraps up the regular season with soccer playoffs to start Thursday, October 15.

In the girls tennis match, the singles sweep included Olivia Herzog (6-0, 6-0), Megan Johnson (6-1, 6-2), Alex Huemoeller (6-2, 6-3), and Olivia McDermott (6-2, 2-6, 10-4). The doubles pairings all won as well, Caitlynne Bussert/Cora Barrett (6-0, 6-1), Lauren Thamert/Klara Blacker (6-4, 6-2), and Emma Herzog/Alivia Schuster (6-2, 6-2).

The fifth-seeded Huskies lost a 4-3 match to the fourth-seeded Raiders earlier this season and get a rematch in Thursday's quarterfinals. Semifinals and finals are next week.

OHS girls soccer weathered an early onslaught by Mayo, who had chance after chance but wasn't able to slip anything past goalkeeper Greta Korbel and the Huskies defense, who was playing without future-Division II player Emma Dahnert. Sarah Kingland, Libby Janka, Taylor Schlauderaff, Hailey Fox, Janessa Moore, and Lexi Nelson all played solid on the back end.

The Huskies finally generated chances as the first half wore on, and Hillary Haarstad burst into the penalty box to finish a scoring opportunity with about 14-and-a-half-minutes remaining in the first half for a 1-0 lead that would stand as the final score. It was Owatonna's first clean sheet (soccer lingo for shutout) of the season.

Mayo continued to pour on the pressure in the second half. Korbel became aggressive at times leaving the penalty box to get to balls ahead of Mayo attackers.

The OHS boys settled for a 3-3 draw, getting goals from Ryan Gregory, Fletcher Schulz, and Benny Bangs. It was the first time Owatonna had surrendered goals to an opposing team this season on the pitch at the Lincoln Soccer Complex.

Section seedings will be out soon for soccer. The OHS girls and boys should both be home on Thursday, October 15 for the start of the season-ending tournament.
