The Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office said the occupants of the home were in bed when they smelled something burning around 9:40 p.m. The two occupants attempted to leave the house, with the wife thinking her husband was behind her.

She ran to a neighbor’s house and told them that her house was on fire and her husband was still in the house.

The neighbor called 911 then attempted to enter the home but was met with heavy black smoke.

Wanamingo Fire/Rescue Department arrived at the fire in the 500 block of Braget Circle, and began fighting the fire and ventilating the house. The husband was located in the residence a short time later. Life-saving measures were administered on the scene but were unsuccessful.

The sheriff’s office identified the victim as 56-year-old Jay Siegle. His wife, Monica Siegle, was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for evaluation.

The Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire, but it is not considered suspicious.
