Owatonna Curling Club Open House and Super Spiel

The Owatonna Curling Club building, also known as the Fine Arts building, located on the Steele County Fairgrounds, has undergone come changes. Working with the Steele County Fair Board, they made some needed upgrades to the building and their warming room. Construction started in September of 2019 and the first phase of the project is complete.

The Curling Club is holding an Open House on February 8th, from 4 pm to 7 pm, for the public to come in and see what the new club looks like, as well as seeing a curling game in progress. There will also be representatives there from the United States Curling Association to recognize the USCA Volunteer of the Year, Jeremiah Kasten, in his home club. That presentation is scheduled to happen at 6:30 pm. We had the Club President, Ryan Claussen, USCA Volunteer of the Year, Jeremiah Kasten, and Club Member, Brad Bettermann in our studio this morning for Talk of the Town, discussing all things curling.

Included in the remodel, a new warm room, with windows to see all of the action on the ice, men's and women's heated locker rooms, and a food prep area. They have plans in the next phase to potentially add another sheet of ice, as well as update the restroom, and make two separate ones, for the ladies and the gents.

Going on this weekend, the 24th through the 26th, is one of the bonspiels, the Miller Lite Owatonna Super Spiel, to which the public is invited to come in and watch. There will be 12 teams, from the Owatonna area and then some. Anyone can come in and watch, visit with the teams who are hanging out in the warm room, , even discuss learning to curl. They will have food and drink available for a donation, however, it is free to get in and watch. Visitors, and curlers alike, will see the "Spirit of Curling," which is the sportsmanship shown throughout the game and beyond. You celebrate a good shot no matter whose team it is that got it, and you shake hands before and after the game. You will hear "good curling" from everyone on the ice.
