Conventional wisdom might lead you to believe that a conference championship season would include a home game when the playoffs begin. But that's not the case for the Big Nine champion Owatonna High School girls hockey team. They will go on the road as the sixth seed to play Farmington, the third seed, and a middle of the pack team in the South Suburban Conference (SSC). Game time is 7 pm Wednesday, February 9 at Schmitz-Maki Arena in Farmington.

Owatonna won the Big Nine title this winter without losing a league game. Yet the Huskies end up with the sixth seed in Section 1AA. Northfield, the squad that finished behind OHS in the conference race, earned the second seed in the coaches' vote due to their success against the SSC this winter.

The Raiders beat everyone in the section at least once, except for Owatonna. The Huskies lost to Lakeville South (the top seed), Lakeville North (the fourth seed), Dodge County (the fifth seed) and Farmington.

The game against Farmington was a 4-3 final with the Tigers converting three power plays in the third period.

Huskies coach Tony Cloud said, "Every team is a good team. I was hoping to get a little higher. But I can see how people in our section kind of view us down at the bottom...Hopefully we can have a good performance in the section and prove them wrong."

Looking back to the conference clinching win over Northfield last weekend, Cloud said, "It was so exciting. Our girls were so ready to play. Came into the arena focused. Came into the week knowing what was on the line." The 2-0 win over the Raiders gave the Huskies the outright Big Nine title, their ninth overall championship.
