The wait to get into Canada for the first time in 17 months stretched up to eight hours for some travelers in International Falls on Monday according to the Star Tribune.

The border had been closed for nonessential travel from the beginning of last year's pandemic until yesterday, so people were eager to get up north for some fishing, shopping and vacationing.

The good news for anyone heading to Canada today (Tuesday) is that as of 6 a.m. there was no wait time reported. So I guess the early bird doesn't always get the worm.

It sounds like the International Falls crossing was about the only one that experienced really any wait times and certainly the only one whose wait time stretched into hours.

In order to get into Canada, U.S. citizens are required to be both vaccinated against COVID-19 and also must show a negative COVID-19 test within three days to gain entry. Travelers must also fill out an application on a smartphone app before they will be allowed into the country.

Meanwhile on our side of the border the United States still does not allow nonessential travelers from Canada or Mexico, which will be the case until at least August 21st. According to the Star Tribune, the U.S. is planning to require all foreign visitors to be vaccinated before entry.
