Rochester to Hold August Fireworks Show at Soldiers Field?
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - It looks like Rochester will have a community fireworks show this summer, but it won't occur on the Fourth of July and it may not be held at Silver Lake Park.
The Rochester City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on a $40,000 contract with J&M Displays to put on a pyrotechnic show at Soldiers Field Park on August 22nd with a rain date of August 23rd. According to the City Council agenda, city staff is recommending moving this year's event and future Fourth of July fireworks shows away from Silver Lake due to concerns involving traffic, staffing, and safety. The recommendation indicates city staff believes the Soldiers Field site will provide staffing efficiencies and safer operations while utilizing the event infrastructure that has been added at Soldiers Field Park in recent years.
The plan calls for the fireworks to be fired into the sky from the golf course south of the Zumbro River. All of the spectators will be required to stay on the north side of the river where the waterway and existing fencing will serve as safety barriers. The report to the City Council also notes traffic management in the downtown area should be simpler.
The agenda item also notes the plans are contingent on the progression of the coronavirus pandemic and whether such events will be allowed by that time. If not, alternative plans are being developed that could include a drive-in option or a televised broadcast.
