Severe Weather Awareness Week Thursday Tornado Drill Day
Thursday, April 15, 2021 is Tornado Drill Day with two statewide tornado drills taking place. The State of Minnesota conducts Severe Weather Awareness Week in partnership with the National Weather Service and local governments.
The first drill takes place 1:45 p.m. allowing schools, businesses, hospitals and other organizations to practice their emergency plans.
The second drill will be 6:45 p.m. allowing families and second shift workers to practice their plans.
Remember if you don't practice your plan you don't have a plan.
Not all counties in Minnesota are participating in both drills. Rice County and the City of Faribault will be partaking in both.
Remember the outdoor sirens are just that outdoor sirens, not tornado sirens. They are designed to let people outdoors know an emergency message is coming. Tune to KDHL 920 AM or 97.9 FM to hear the message authorities want you to hear.
The FM signal will be free of the crackling you get during storms on AM radio.
Please remember to sign up for Everbridge to receive notifications about watches and warnings in Rice County and the City of Faribault.
Here is some information from HSEM about tornado safety.
More information is also available in the form of a podcast on the KDHL Radio and POWER 96 Radio website. A special hour long program featuring City of Faribault and Rice County emergency management specialists is available from Friday, April 9, 2021.
