Starting New Year’s Day You’ll be Charged for Plastic and Paper Bags in This Minnesota City
Starting on the first day of 2020, if you shop in Minneapolis you should bring your own reusable bag. As of the 1st of January Minneapolis stores will charge 5 cents per plastic or paper bag.
The city voted on the "Bring Your Own Bag" ordinance back in November and it passed 10-0, according to Bring Me the News. The goal of this extra charge is to encourage shoppers to bring their own bags.
Bring Me the News writes that "the city of Minneapolis says that Minnesotans throw away 87,000 tons of plastic bags a year." It's time to get rid of those things!
There are some exceptions to the "Bring Your Own Bag" ordinance. The following are exemptions to the rule:
Bags for produce, bulk foods, small items, restaurant carryouts, food banks, farmers' markets, and dry cleaning bags, for example, will carry no extra charge.
The same goes for bags given at hospitals, car dealerships and car washes.
