Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - There’s been a sad ending to the tale of Rochester’s runaway bison.

The Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department today reported the search for the bison ended Friday evening in a wooded area in rural southwest Rochester. A statement says a citizen contacted the Sheriff’s Department after spotting the wandering bison about a mile and a half southwest of the Willow Creek Golf Course clubhouse.

The responding deputies contacted the animal’s owner and a decision was made to put down the bison because of the public safety issues associated with having it on the loose near a highly populated area. The owner shot the bison, who then took possession of the carcass.

The first reports of the runaway bison came in last weekend. The news release says Sheriff’s Office thanks the public for their assistance in keeping officials informed on the locations of the bison while he was on the move.
