Thrillers and Yawners , HVL vs TRC Basketball Showdown

There are bound to be some runaways and some exciting games in a 14 game basketball showcase.

That's exactly what happened Saturday during the second annual HVL vs TRC Showdown at the Rochester Mayo Civic Center.

As luck would have it (or not) I would have a yawner and a thriller to broadcast.

The Goodhue Girls came from behind to defeat Caledonia 50-41 in an entertaining game.

The St. Charles Saints boys ran away from Cannon Falls 76-51 with every player on both teams playing and some Saints over the final 10 minutes plus of the game.

St. Charles coaxed turnover after turnover in the first half to take a commanding 49-18 lead at the break.

Bomber Head Coach Josh Davisson used nearly every ticktock of the clock at halftime to instruct his team on how to avoid the turnovers.

The very first play of the second half for Cannon Falls resulted in, a turnover.

St. Charles would end the game with 26 points scored off turnovers.

The Saints had 14 players score in the game and the Bombers 9.

St. Charles was rated #12 in the latest Minnesota Basketball News poll in Class AA and showed why.

6'3 junior Drew Leistikow had 12 points, 5'8 freshman Kooper Vaughn 11 points and 6'1 junior Sam Holtz 10 points to lead the St. Charles attack.

Seniors Chase Reber and Ryan Dirckx led Cannon Falls with 11 points each.

There was a very good crowd in the Auditorium to witness a great game between two of the top teams in the state in Class AA. #3 Caledonia and #8 Lake City.

The Tigers led 39-33 at the half and led until about the 4 minute to go in the game mark.

I remember telling John Millea of the Minnesota State High School League sitting next to me during the game that Caledonia needed to use their athleticism more to get to the basket, instead of shooting so many three point shots.

Sure enough, following a Warrior time out, that's exactly what they did and it worked.

Owen King and Noah King each hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch for Caledonia.

6'3 senior Owen King scored his 2,000th career point in the first half and had 29 in the game. 6'2 sophomore Noah King added 15 points and 6'6 senior Marten Morem tallied 14 points.

Lake City 6'2 sophomore Nathan Heise had 19 points, 5'11 senior Marc Kjos added 19 and 6'1 senior Charlie White had 12 points.
