St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - It may not be proper etiquette, but the Minnesota Court of Appeals has ruled that it is not illegal to pull into the outside lane on a four-lane road after making a left turn.

The ruling handed down Tuesday involves a Minnetonka man who had his driver's license revoked following a traffic stop in September 2018 during which a Minnetonka police officer stopped him because he did not pull into the lane closest to the centerline while turning left.  The officer believed it was against the law. The traffic stop led to a breath test and the man's arrest.

In its ruling, the appeals court ordered the Hennepin County judge handling the case to rescind the revocation of the man's driver's license. The decision states, because state law does not require a motorist to enter the innermost lane of a roadway following a left turn, the officer did not have a reasonable articulable, suspicion to initiate the traffic stop.
