Waseca To Introduce Ordinance To Raise The Tobacco Purchase Age To 21
Wednesday night the Waseca City Council was expected to introduce an ordinance that would raise the age requirement for purchasing tobacco. The idea of raising the age to purchase tobacco has been a popular one over the last several years.
The ordinance which is going to be known as Tobacco 21 would raise the purchase age from 18 to 21. After the introduction of the ordinance tonight, a public hearing will then be set.
In a letter to the editor in the Mankato Free Press citizens have called for "South Central Minnesota to join the Tobacco 21 movement along with Mankato, North Mankato, St. Peter and others who have explored how to protect youth from relentless tobacco industry tactics."
Just recently St. Peter passed a Tobacco 21 ordinance in May, which went into effect in August.
