Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Boys Basketball Season Ends

The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers lost a heartbreaker to the Springfield Tigers 70-66 last night at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Mn.  Missed layups and missed free throws doomed the Buccaneers who connected on 13 three point baskets in the game.

With just over 2 minutes to go down by 8 points WEM got to within a point with just under a minute to go but a missed layup followed by a foul on the rebound attempt appeared to seal their fate.

Springfield senior 6'3 Decker Scheffler led the Tigers with 22 points.  He was held to one field goal the entire second half but was 4 of 5 from the free throw line in the final couple minutes.

Springfield was 10 of 13 from the free throw line while Waterville-Elysian-Morristown was 3 of 11.  2 of 9 in the second half.

Buccaneers senior 6'3 Grant McBroom tried to put the team on his back in the second half hitting clutch shots and finished with 28 points, 6 three point baskets.  Senior 5'9 Zach Sticken came off the bench to hit four big three point shots including two in their amazing comeback.

Sophomore 6'1 Domanik Paulson hit 3 three point baskets in the first half but had defenders swarm him in the second half and hold him to one two point basket.

Minnesota Basketball News final boys ratings had WEM rated #5 and Springfield #7.  The Buccaneers ended their season 26-3 and the Tigers now have the same record.

The earlier game at Gustavus Class A #1 rated BOLD was defeated by #6 rated New Ulm Cathedral.  The Warriors just couldn't handle the size of the Greyhounds who controlled the glass all night.

The final score was 82-68.

Springfield and New Ulm Cathedral have met twice during the regular season with the Greyhounds winning by 2 points and 6 points.  They collide for the Section 2A title this Friday, March 13, 2020 at Minnesota State Mankato.  Game time 6:00 p.m.

That will be followed by the 2AA Championship between Jordan and Waseca at 8:00 p.m.
