Webster Advances to Final Weekend Dundas Ends Season

The Webster Sox are trying to make the most of their first trip to the Minnesota Baseball Association Class C State Amateur tournament.  The Sox edged the Monticello Polecats 6-5 in Dundas today.

Current Winona State pitcher, junior Peter Tveite scattered 4 hits over 8 innings with 1 run allowed while walking 1, hitting a batter and striking out 8.  Tveite graduated from Lakeville North High School in 2020.

Jordan Huwe pitched the 9th inning with 2 hits given up including a double with 4 unearned runs allowed, a hit batter, 1 walk and no strikeouts. Huwe will be a junior at St. Johns in Collegeville this fall. He is also a Lakeville North High School graduate.

It was a 1-1 game going into the 8th inning when the Sox scored 2 runs to take the lead.

Webster added 3 runs in the 9th and needed them.  The Sox had 12 hits, Polecats 6 hits in the game.

Webster had 2 errors, Monticello 1.

In addition to pitching another terrific game Tveite had 3 hits and a RBI to lead the Sox to victory.  William Arendt also had a pair of hits.  Jacob Bellile 3 hits and a RBI, Peter Grassl a pair of hits.

Four pitchers threw for Monticello with Tanner Eckert starting the game and going 7 2/3 innings, allowing 9 hits, 3 runs, 1 earned with 5 strikeouts and no walks.

Webster will play on Friday, September 2, 2022 in Faribault against the Watertown Red Devils who defeated Cold Spring 6-4 today (Sunday) in Faribault.

Watertown fell behind 3-0 after the first half inning only to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

The Rockies did all their damage in the first inning with two outs. David Jonas was walked, Dustin Dufner and Alex Geislinger got back to back singles  a walk and a error loaded the bases again for Cole Fuchs to get a RBI on a bases loaded walk.  The Cold Spring half ended with a strikeout with the bases loaded.

The Red Devils opened their half with a walk and three successive singles by Matt Butler, Ben Smith and Player of the Game Zach Iten.  An error extended the inning before a bases load walk gave Mitch Kelzer a RBI.

Watertown would score three runs in the bottom of the 4th innng when 8 batters came to the plate.

Ben Theisen walked to open the inning.  Following a strikeout Patrick Tschida hammered a double placing runners at second and third base.  Matt Butler delivered a RBI single, Ben Smith cracked a single for an RBI and during the next at bat got deliberately caught in a run down allowing the third run of the inning to score from third base.

Cold Spring scratched out a run in the 7th inning to get closer.  The inning opened with a liner to the shortstop followed by a Jordan Neu single.  During a strikeout Neu would steal second base.

The Red Devils made a pitching change.  Next Dustin Duffner hammered a 1-2 count pitch for a RBI single closing the book on Watertown starter Holt Hunziker.

Peter Tschida came in to pitch allowing back to back singles before retiring the last 7 batters he faced.

In the other two Sunday games in Faribault the Stark Longhorns scored six runs in the top of the 9th inning to defeat the Bemidji Blue Ox 7-3.

It was a 1-1 game going into the scheduled final inning with both teams scoring a run in the 8th inning.

Back to back singles opened the top of the 9th for Stark by Brandon Helget and Arian Saenz which ended starting pitcher isaiah Biehn's day on the mound.

Turner Storm came in relief and Zach Haala greeted him with a bunt single to load the bases.  Dylan Klein was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a RBI before a fly out to left field.

David Surprenant smacked a two run single to center but the two runs would probably not have scored had the center fielder thrown the ball into the infield right away.  Guys were flying around the bases before he hurled the ball home.

Following a strikeout Sean Mathiowetz stroked a RBI single.

Left handed pitcher Adam Sellner started the game for Stark and left after facing two batters in the 9th inning.  He allowed a single by Ben Thoma and hit Turner Storm.

Bazil Zuehlke hammered a two run single to greet left handed reliever from Springfield Justin Haugo but Haugo retired the next three batters to secure the victory.

Line totals were:  Stark  7 runs  11 hits  1 error
Bemidji 3 runs   7 hits   0 errors

Dumont edged Richmond 7-6 in a walk off in the 12th inning of a marathon game.

Lefty Luke Jokela started for the Richmond Royals and right handed pitcher Jordan Roos began the game for the Dumont Saints.

The Saints scored in the second inning when #9 batter in the order Carson Maudal stroked a RBI single scoring Patrick Kussats who walked with one out.

Dumont added another run in the third when Roos opened the inning with a 0-2 count single.  He would score on a Erik Deal single.

Richmond scored a run in the fourth and one in the fifth to tie the game.  Just Schroeder hit a no doubt home run to center with one out in the fourth inning.

Chase Aleshire smacked a one out double in the 5th and scored on a two out 1-2 count double by Cole Schmitz.

The Saints scored 4 runs in the 6th inning when 9 batters stepped to the plate and 4 managed hits

Maudal opened with a single.  James Paul smacked a single before Roos hammered a two run double.  Following a double play Jake Uhlich was walked and scored on a double stroked by Mason Lampe.

Richmond had back to back home runs from Cole Schmitz and Sam Holthaus to start the 8th inning then scored two in the 9th to make things interesting.

A walk by Carter Thelen opened the 9th.  Following a strikeout there was a error.  The second out was recorded by Thelen would score on  a passed ball.  Schmitz hit a RBI single to tie the game.

Both teams had their chances before Lampe hit the walk off single scoring Roos and ending the game.

Speaking of marathons the Bird Island Bullfrogs ended the Loretto Larks season with a 3-2 walk off win in the 21st inning of their game in Dundas.  The Bullfrogs will play Red Wing in Faribault on Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 11:00 a.m.

The Waconia Lakers edged the Fergus Falls Hurricanes 9-8 to advance to the final weekend of the Class C State Tournament.  The game was moved to Waconia on Sunday due to rainouts Saturday and the impossibility of having games in Miesville.

The Lakers will play the Buckman BIllygoats in Dundas Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 1:30 p.m.

Delano defeated Willmar 5-0 in a game moved to Waconia Sunday.  The Athletics will play the Isanti Redbirds in Faribault Saturday, September 3, 2022 at 1:30 p.m.

11 of the 16 Region Champions advanced to the final weekend of the Class C Tournament.

In Class B no games could be held in Miesville so after Saturday contests the tournament resumes on Friday, September 2, 2022 in Miesville and is now double elimination.

Miesville will play Blaine at 6:00 p.m. followed 30 minutes later by Rochester and Champlin Park.  Winners play 1:30 p.m. Saturday after losers play 11:00 a.m. Saturday.

Dundas ended their season with a 8-4 loss to the Blaine Fusion.

The Fusion cranked out 15 hits while the Dukes tallied 7.

Kyle Hrncir suffered the loss while throwing the first 2 innings allowing 7 hits 6 earned runs, walked 2, struck out 1.  Ryan Bell threw 3 innings with 6 hits allowed, 1 earned run, with 2 walks, 3 strikeouts,  Todd Mathison ended the game throwing the final 3 innings with 2 hits, 1 earned run, 4 strikeouts, 0 walks.  The two hits were a double and home run.

No Dundas player had more than one hit.  Hayden Lanoue hit a two run home run for the Dukes.  Mike Ludwig and Nate Van Roekel had doubles.
