WEM Girls Defend Their Way to Victory
The Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers had a poor shooting night in their home gym tonight but pulled out a 54-38 win over the Springfield Tigers. The #5 seed in the South Subsection of Section 2A Tigers were ahead 22-20 at the half despite committing 13 turnovers to the Bucs 4.
Waterville-Elysian-Morristown jacked up three point shot after three point shot and simply couldn't hit them. The second half the Bucs did hit five three point shots. They also did a better job of getting points off turnovers. WEM scored 11 points off 10 second half Tigers turnovers after cashing in on two of 13 first half miscues.
The #1 South Subsection 2A seed Buccaneers were 9 of 18 from the free throw line while Springfield connected on 3 of 6 free throws.
Waterville-Elysian-Morristown was ranked #8 in the final Minnesota Basketball News girls basketball state ratings.
Senior Toryn Richards led the Bucs with 22 points. Senior Brielle Bartelt received our Cashwise Foods and Pharmacy of Owatonna Delivery of the game for multiple awesome passes in the contest. Bartelt also had 7 points, classmate Ellie Ready had 9 points.
There are nights where the ball simply won't go in the basket. Consistent defense can carry you through some of those nights. That was the case in Waterville. Springfield came into the game averaging 49.2 points per game while WEM averaged 61.5 offensively.
The Bucs have one of the best defenses in the state in terms of points allowed at 39 per game.
Before the game Toryn Richards was awarded the Section 2 Triple A Award for excellence in Academics, Athletics and the Arts. The 5'11 player can perform at any position on the floor. She often got after the main ballhandler trying to bring the ball up the court .
Richards is an All-State peformer in volleyball, basketball and track and field. She was in choir throughout her high school career and had a 3.97 GPA .
Waterville-Elysian-Morristown (17-3) will host Martin County West Tuesday after the #2 seed Mavericks defeated St. Clair 62-53. MCW has a 14-5 record.
