A New All-Time Leading Scorer for Medford Basketball

Senior Emma Kniefel became the Medford Tigers all-time leading scorer in basketball Tuesday, surpassing 1962 graduate Chuck Wobbrock. He was in attendance and said he was happy to see her hard work pay off in reaching the milestone. He scored 1,649 points.

Kniefel needed just four points coming into the contest against Hayfield. Those points came quickly and the game was stopped briefly to acknowledge the record. Unfortunately, Kniefel was forced to leave the game a short time later with an arch injury in her foot that she says has been an ongoing issue. She scored seven points in the Tigers' 63-37 win over the Vikings.

After the game Kniefel shared her feelings, "It's hard to describe. I'm just so happy. It's nice to see that your hard work pays off. I couldn't do it without me teammates, my coaches, my family, everyone that supports me. It's such a great milestone. I feel good."

She says the lead up to the record weighed on her a little bit, "Not too bad. It was there but I just wanted to go out and play. I have been struggling this year. I feel very pressured but now that this is over, I'm just going to try and play."

"I played volleyball and basketball since I was a wee little lad. Basketball always stuck with me. It was always my favorite. I was always get in the gym when I can, just to get better. Every little girl's dream is to go to state with their team." Medford had an unbeaten regular season in 2018-19 but were upset in the second round of the subsection.

Kniefel met Wobbrock for the first time on Tuesday night, "He said how much of an honor it was to be here tonight. He's proud of my hard work. It's just so cool to see him. It was really nice of him to be here."

Wobbrock is OK with dropping to number two on the scoring list, "I'm not sad. It's time. I had a good ride. When you get to 57 years, what can you say it's been a good ride. She deserves it. She works hard. Hate to see her get hurt tonight. She broke the record and I'm OK with that."

Wobbrock was recently inducted into the Medford Hall of Fame along with his 1962 basketball team, "I have many memories. Many, many memories. The game has changed now with three pointers. The game is longer. You play more games."

Katie Dylla led the Tigers on Tuesday with 19 points. Kiley Nihart and Izzy Reuvers each added ten. Jenna Berg and Kniefel scored seven apiece. Medford forced many turnovers and had the running game on full display with quite a few fast break points.
