BOOYA! With Fall Arriving, It’s Time To Booya!
Booya! It's something that I have served and eaten since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. If you haven't had a bowl of this deliciousness you are in luck! With the weather turning cooler, booya pots will be out cooking over the next several weekends.
Before I tell you where you can get some, you might be wondering what is booya. It's not just what former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura would yell at the press. Booya is tough to define as recipes are different everywhere you go but it is loosely based on making a base or broth derived from meat bones, to which you would add vegetables. Traditionally you would then add beef, chicken, or pork to make a meat booyah with more vegetables such as carrots, peas, onion, and potatoes also in the mix. Trust me it's delicious!
Here are some booya celebrations near us, if you care to sample everything fall has to offer.
Sept. 16: St. Jerome Church Fall Festival, Booya and Car show, St. Jerome Church, 380 E. Roselawn Ave., Maplewood; takeout booya beginning at 6 a.m. (bring your own non-glass container), by the bowl starts at 11:30 a.m.
Sept 23: 4th Annual Vulcan Booya will be at Mancini's 531 7th St W, Saint Paul, Minnesota 55102. Serving begins at 11 AM.
If there are any around the area, let me know so I can update this with more booya celebrations!
