Finally a nice day for a game! In fact, a couple of Kenyon-Wanamingo players commented that is was hot on Tuesday as the team prepared to play Byron in an HVL fast pitch softball game in Byron. Game time temperature was 74 degrees with a sunny, blue sky.

The Bears scored an 11-0, five-inning win. Byron scored in each of the four innings they batted and scored every single one of their runs with two outs. After pushing in a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and one in the second, the Bears exploded with a seven-run third inning, highlighted by a grand slam from freshman catcher Danielle Fode.

Kenyon-Wanamingo committed at least one error in each inning, allowing Byron extra chances to score. The Knights put runners on base in every inning but only advanced runners to second base twice and once to third. KW put multiple runners aboard only once, in the fifth inning when they left the bases loaded as the game ended.

Emma Berquam tossed the first three innings for the Knights, giving up six hits and five walks. Morgyn Schaefer threw the fourth. Taylor O'Donnell threw the complete game for Byron, allowing five hits and hitting one batter. Berquam, Schaefer, Britt Woods, Nora Woock and Sydney Burow had the KW hits, all singles.

Byron kick-started each of their innings in a variety of ways. After a two-base error to open the bottom of the first, they followed with a fly out and the runner thrown out trying to steal third. It seemed that KW had wiggled out of a jam. But a double, a single, an error and two walks led to two runs.

The home second began with a fly out and foul out, but a walk, hit batter and error led to a run. The bottom of the third started with a strikeout. A single and a sacrifice left the Bears with a runner at third and two out. A triple, double, an error, a couple of walks and the grand slam capped the seven-run outburst. The Bears subbed in some reserves at the plate in the fourth and manufactured one more run. Allison Connelly had two hits for Byron.

Kenyon-Wanamingo (1-12) plays at No. 2 AA Zumbrota-Mazeppa Wednesday afternoon. Thursday they travel to Blooming Prairie. Friday the Knights are at Bethlehem Academy in Faribault with coverage on KDHL AM 920. Byron (10-5) goes to Winona Cotter Wednesday.
