The next time you are heading to the Mall of America, maybe take a detour along American Boulevard and 30th Avenue South and check out that will be one of the longest murals in all of Minnesota. The mural, which is expected to be done by the end of September will run more than 750 feet along the outside of an Xcel Energy Substation building on both American Boulevard and 30th Avenue South.

KARE-11 in the Twin Cities reports that the project was "supposed to happen in 2019 but was put on hold due to the pandemic." The artists behind the large scale project are part of an organization known as "Ua Si Creative" which is "a Hmong, female-owned artist collective" based in Bloomington.

The mural itself according to a piece done by KARE 11 will be "a tapestry of narratives depicted by a majority of BIPOC and women artists."

The City of Bloomington will be holding a celebration on September the 18th to mark the completion of the project according to a press release from the City of Bloomington. The party will be from 5-10pm along the site of the mural. The press release states that those in attendance will;

  • An opportunity to meet the artists
  • Remarks at 6 p.m. from Bloomington Mayor Tim Busse, Ua Si Creative, Artistry’s Executive Director Kevin Ramach, and Chris Clark, President, Xcel Energy – Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota
  • Celebratory music from DJ Yasmeenah
  • Food from Soul Lao, Yum Yum, YouniverseFoodie Waffles, Que Tal Street Eats, and Spinning Wylde
  • Performances by Kalpulli Yaocenoxtli and creative activations inspired by elements of the murals.

The mural from what I've seen online looks pretty cool. Of course here in Faribault, we know a thing or two about murals too.
