Minnesota landlords eased burdens by enacting safeguards in relation to rent and evictions. However, as of last week, those securities began disappearing. A 15-day notice is no longer required before an eviction notice is filed due to delinquent rent. According to AP News, lease termination can also occur more easily now.

As these protections lift, rental evictions are on the rise in Minnesota.

Now, nearly 50,000 applications have gone through RentHelpMN for assistance with past-due rent. RentHelpMN assists renters by distributing federal money to aid pandemic-related problems.

According to Minnesota Public Radio, nearly $144 million in financial aid has been administered to Minnesota residents through RentHelpMN.

Elizabeth Sauer, managing attorney for Central Minnesota Legal Services, however, has some worries going forward.

She said:

“There’s a lot of people who are in this circumstance. We could have a whole bunch of landlords who just decide they are not going to continue to rent to these tenants who have struggled to pay their rent during the pandemic."

One thing is for certain. As the pandemic transforms and slows, Minnesotans are in store for a whole new set of changes and challenges.
