I visited Nerstrand Big Woods State Park last fall, before there was any snow on the ground, to show my granddaughters the waterfalls and some of the trails, and of course we had to stop and play on the swings in the park. This park is a very family friendly place and this weekend they'll be hosting a fun event for adults and kids.

On Saturday, February 4, they're hosting the annual Candlelight Event from 5:30-8:30PM. There will be interactive activities like listening for the barred owl as well as various winter night sounds as you stroll along approximately 2 miles of fairly level lighted trails. You'll also have a choice of shorter loops for those wishing to take a shorter walk. You'll also have the option to cross country ski or snowshoe, with snowshoes available for rent.

If you have small children, make sure to stop out early, just as it is getting dark, and make sure to bring a sled to pull the kids on the trails. Toast marshmallows and warm up around the campfire or around the wood stove with hot cider and cookies inside the Visitor Center. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Big Woods State Park, this event is free and open to the public but a vehicle permit is required to enter the park.

To save time you can purchase your vehicle permit in advance by visiting mndnr.gov/reservations.
